Painted Pony Parties: The Latest Rage Among Collectors

Written by Rod Barker on September 1st, 2009

As those of you who faithfully read our E-Newsletter know, with each monthly update of our website we feature a Collector of the Month. As story lovers, we like to select collectors who have a unique Painted Pony story to receive this recognition. Our September selection was made easy when we received a written account from a collector living in Sedona, Arizona whose love for Painted Ponies moved her to host a Painted Ponies Party for friends in hopes that they would understand her passion, and maybe even catch it themselves.

Her professional name is Scottie Littlestar and she is a full-time psychic whose extraordinary sensibilities have helped people better understand themselves, and their lives (past, present and future). When I asked her about the special connection she felt with Painted Ponies, she reminisced about the kinship she felt with the first horse she received at the age of eight, and the feelings of freedom, elation and pure pleasure that come when she gallops across a pasture. “When riding a horse, anything seems possible,” she said, adding that something of that same spirit came through each Painted Pony.

As you read what Ms. Littlestar wrote, I think you will understand why she is our Collector of the Month for September:

Hi Everyone,

I bought 1 TOPP (a pre-E Caballo Brilliante) in Sedona, back in 2003. Then I bought Incognito in 2006 at the Phoenix Airport, coming back from a visit with my mother in CA. While I’ve always loved collecting horse statues (since the 80’s); TOPP collecting didn’t really take off for me until my friend Vince (from CA), came to visit me, early May 2009. We went to Jerome, AZ for the day and while driving out of town, I spotted a store front window, full of horse statues (the Turquoise Spider). I said to Vince “I have to go in there!” as I was already turning the car into the parking spot right in front of the store. When I saw a 2-tiered table full of TOPPs, I said to my friend “You might as well wait in the car, ’cause I’m not leaving without buying one!” I bought Viva Las Vegas and the new TOPP Anniversary Edition book. The Anniversary Edition book fueled my hunger & helped me to look for specific Ponies in the beginning. But, after I collected the first 24 or so it became a true addiction. I also bought every single TOPP book and 1 TOPP DVD that Ali MacGraw narrated.

I’m going to have a ‘Pony Party’ at my home on Monday, to introduce approximately 10-12 friends to my new ‘Herd.’ I’m going to act like an eccentric millionaire…serving shrimp, veggies, chips & dip, various goodies & non-alcoholic sparking drinks. I’ll have the books spread around for everyone to look through and the TOPP DVD playing on the TV throughout the party, so anyone that wants to sit for awhile can watch it and learn about the Painted Ponies. We’re going to play ‘Painted Pony Games’ that I’m going to create, which will help them to get to know the Ponies, such as: Which five are the rarest? Which ones are my 5 favorites? (That’ll be difficult to figure out, even for me). And a game to see if they can match 10 of the Ponies’ names with the actual figurine. At the end of the evening, I’m going to pull one of their names out of a bowl and that person will ‘win’ a Painted Pony. I will have all the non-1st Editions on the table and they’ll get to pick whichever one they want to take home. (We’ll ‘toast the winner’ with champagne).

Hugs,
Scottie Littlestar - Spiritual Psychic of Sedona
& Very Proud Owner of over 80 TOPPS (over 72 - 1st Editions!)

I enjoyed reading about your party and your addiction, The party sounds so fun, if you ever have another I would love to be invited and if not, I’d love to see your collection privately. I’ve seen the horses and been tempted to buy, but so far have been able to resist. I feel that’s coming to an end. I’m a real horse lover, bred Peruvian pasos for a number of years.

You rock! I never thought about having a Painted Pony party. I have all but 3 painted ponies. I have all the books, cups, pins, DVD, etc I have a few ponies at work on my desk. Everyone loves them. I donated one for our Combined Federal Campaign auction to raise money. I’d like to know how your party turned out.

I would love to attend one. I have a broken neck, so I would have someone bring me in their RV.
